Although certain state laws may draw a distinction between the term “mechanic’s lien” and “construction lien,” the terms generally refer to the same thing. Construction workers are no longer commonly referred to as mechanics, but the term survives based on the statute.
Mechanics who work on automobiles or other movable equipment are not entitled to file a mechanic’s lien against the property. Such mechanics employ possessory liens where owners only get their cars back once they have paid the mechanic for services rendered.
